The quickest route to a flat or overprocessed clip is to type “HDR” and nothing else. The acronym alone tends to produce halos around edges, every surface equally bright and a sheen that looks like a filter. The contrast comes from the light you describe: a hard key on one side for a bright highlight, a dark surround for deep shadows, and a glint on jewelry or skin for the brightest point. Describe those three, and the range follows.
